HMS Artful, the UK’s most advanced nuclear submarine, which is due to begin sea trials in August 2016, has been kitted out with a mini VMware virtualised data centre to control its ‘Common Combat System’, for missile launch.
The system was successfully tested in February by The Royal Navy, who declared it enables “greater security”, and now the data centre is to be retrofitted to earlier model submarines.
VMware have stated their data centre takes up just 20% of the footprint of previous systems, making it perfect when space comes at a premium.
HMS Artful will be able to carry up to 38 torpedoes, and can be armed with Tomahawk land-attack missiles that have a range of 1,240 miles.
